Digital Divide

Transcend provides strategic grants and investments to increase digital access through broadband networks and developing digital literacy skills.

The term “digital divide” is the gap between members of our community connecting to the digital world.

Transcend believes we can close the digital divide through affordable high-speed broadband internet, internet-enabled devices, quality technical support, and digital literacy and digital wellness.

The digital divide affects people of lower income levels, and students and families in rural counties more than affluent urban communities.

As we keep growing our digital world, we risk making the digital gap greater. This will disproportionately hurt our vulnerable population’s access to education, healthcare, work opportunities, workforce development, and civic engagement.

"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said: “Broadband is the great infrastructure challenge of the early 21st century. Like electricity a century ago, broadband is a foundation for economic growth, job creation, global competitiveness and a better way of life. It is enabling entire new industries and unlocking vast new possibilities for existing ones. It is changing how we educate children, deliver healthcare, manage energy, ensure public safety, engage government, and access, organize and disseminate knowledge.”

We want to change the impact of digital divide

The digital divide is easily seen between urban and rural areas; educated and uneducated populations; and more or less industrially developed areas.

But even when communities have some access to technology, they are still divided by lower-performance computers, low quality wireless connections, dial-up speeds, and old copper wires.

Transcend is partnering with like-minded organizations to launch a comprehensive effort to create a sustainable solution for these communities to connect and close the divide.

Funding

The target for our rural Utah connectivity project is to raise and deploy an initial investment of $1.5 million, with an opportunity for follow-on funding.

Timeline

Transcend is committed long-term. We have already invested over $500K into rural Utah projects. We intend to raise and deploy funds throughout 2024 with corporate partnerships, government entities, and other community organizations.
